Designing for Diversity: This highly interactive and challenging course deepens participants’ understanding of the spectrum of diversity, and prepares them to develop robust and equity-centered engagement designs and workplans, and implement and evaluate with fidelity. Full course is 2 days in person; customized executive courses and shorter refresher courses are also available.
Auditing Your Organization for P2 Success: This action-oriented content is for organizations that have committed to ethical and inclusive public participation (P2) and are ready to critically examine their policies, practices, proficiencies, and performance — what’s in place, where the gaps are, what we can learn from others — and then plan actions to fully realize those P2 commitments. Optimal offering is over two sessions with consulting support before, between and after (total of 16+ hours), and taught live online or in person.
Stakeholder Mapping: This skills course provides participants with a robust and accessible process to identify and analyze key stakeholders for any engagement project – a critical step in an inclusive and equity-centered engagement design process. Participants may take this as a freestanding course or as a refresher following Designing for Diversity. Taught live online (4.5 hours) or in person (~6 hours).
Workshops, Surveys, and Tours — Oh My! (Choosing the Right P2 Tools): This 3.5-hour skills course dives into how to choose the most appropriate tools or techniques based on what you’re trying to accomplish. Explores common pitfalls, decision-making strategies, and tips to handle messy situations. Taught live online or in person.
Projects, publications
Ramsey County MN Parks and Recreation, Saint Paul MN Public Schools, City of Woodbury MN, and US Army Corps of Engineers Collaboration and Public Participation Center of Expertise: Collaborating with each organization to develop customized equity-centered engagement systems, structures, and training programs. Courses have included Designing for Diversity (full, executive, and refresher courses), Stakeholder Mapping, Choosing the Right P2 Tools, and Auditing Your Organization for P2 Success.
MnDOT business planning training: For the agency’s business planning initiative, led development of business planning training program for the 44 MnDOT districts and offices, including multiple pilots and all participant materials; led development of Train-the-Trainer (T3) program and Training Guide; delivered the T3 program to MnDOT staff along with multiple trainings to districts and offices throughout the state.
MnDOT Multicultural Communications and Engagement Training Program: This project in collaboration with Tempo Creative was based on MnDOT’s commitment to effectively communicating with and engaging the full range of Minnesota’s diverse communities for design and construction projects, employment opportunities, and marketing MnDOT initiatives.
Public Participation Fieldbook: This Fieldbook coauthored by Dr. John Bryson and Anne Carroll introduces the theory and practice of working with others in intra-organizational, inter-organizational, and community settings. The general focus is on how an organization or community can use participation to achieve the common good or create public value as a result of a change effort.
